Bored Foodie Frens: Lisbon
Bored Foodie Walking Tour Powered by Apecoin GWG Small Grant Program with Bites Curated by Mono
Lisbon Portugal is one of the oldest cities in Europe, home to beautiful architecture, delicious cuisine, and welcoming citizens. One of the best ways to explore a new place is to immerse yourself in the culture. Find local bites with great people. Break bread together. Laugh and share stories.
In order to truly learn to love the world you need to get out and see it. Leave the hotel, walk as much as you can, and do it with people who make you smile.
Bored Foodie Frens (BFF)
The company was founded in 2023 by Chanimal, Cakepop, and Popil. The Foodie Frens set out with a vision to create a global community with one goal in mind: connect the members of the Bored Ape Yacht Club, Mutant Ape Yacht Club, and Apecoin holders via great culinary gatherings.Â
ApeFest Hong Kong in 2023 was a major catalyst for their first activation in New York city. While many Apes were able to make it out to Hong Kong, there were a group of community members who opted to stay back in New York and celebrate ApeFest in person in the city with Bored Foodie Frens enjoying dim sum together.
This is the ethos of Bored Foodie Frens: global activations with like minded foodies excited about the Bored Ape Yacht Club and all it represents. Read more about Chanimal and Bored Foodie Frens recommendations in Hong Kong here.
Walking Tour in Lisbon
Mono’s global presence as a lifestyle brand aligns with the ethos of BFF and it was this alignment that led to the partnership in Lisbon. With curated bites by Mono, the walking tour of Lisbon was celebrated by foodie frens on the last day of ApeFest Lisbon.
I did a walking tour in Brazil many years ago (pre NFTs ) and it was very memorable experience. When Popil mentioned to me about the Governance Working Group x Apecoin On-Chain Small Grants was accepting applications, I thought that most IRL events are confined to a single location, What if Bored Foodie Frens created a dynamic experience for BAYC, MAYC & Apecoin holders thru tasting the food of Lisbon in a walking tour to get to know the flavors of a destination. I ran the ideas through Hoarder and he liked it so I decided to apply as soon as I was able to contact some local Lisbon tour groups.
So for the Lisbon ApeFest I asked El Mono of Mono to join as a Honorary Bored Foodies Frens this season to create a culinary & cultural adventure for those joining the "Bored Foodies Walking Tour" on Sunday Oct 20.
El Mono posts awesome food on Instagram too and I met him so he was a no brainer to ask him to be an honorary Bored Foodie Fren.
Mono will curate some local food choices unique to Lisbon such as, "Pastéis de bacalhau" Salted Cod Fritters, "Camarão crocante" Crispy Shrimp and walking side stop to try "pasteis de nata" also known as Portuguese tarts.
We will have some surprise goodies for those that join and will try our best to make this an amazing event where you can gain calories as you walk it off. - Chanimal
With a great group of community members and El Mono as the Foodie Fren for this activation the group of modern nomads met at Solar Dos Bicos to kick off the event. We shared laughs, stories, and amazing food curated by Mono.
We shared locally sourced, fresh caught sardines and shrimp, amazing steak cuts and traditional Portuguese rice dishes alongside the famous Pastéis de bacalhau. Bacalhau, or cod, is one of the most celebrated dishes in Lisbon and Portugal as a whole. The delectable fish croquettes are one of the local favorites and my personal favorite dish of the day.
At the meetup we also held a raffle where attendees could win prizes from BoredIn, Apecoin, BoredTea, ApeChain and more all sponsored by the Apecoin Governance Working Group Small Grant Program for ApeFest Lisbon.
Without programs like this one by the Governance Working Group (GWG), activations like this community event would not be possible. Bored Foodie Frens and Mono are grateful for the opportunity to work directly with the GWG and look forward to future partnerships.
The gathering for this Walking Tour was full of entrepreneurs, artists, and foodies from all over the world. Around the table you could hear conversations in English, Russian, Spanish and the culture was truly palpable. Check out the highlight reel posted here.
We stopped to learn more about many of the tourist hotspots in Lisbon like the Praça do Comércio, Sé Cathedral, São Domingos Church, and miradouro do Chão do Loureiro.
With expert local guides the tips and historical insights as we journeyed through the city of Lisbon were the perfect compliment to full stomachs. We even stopped for some famous Pasteis de Nata, a popular dessert and breakfast in Lisbon from one of the oldest establishments in the city.
Be sure to not forget the cinnamon next time you are in Lisbon.
Here were my favorite bites.
Seafood rice or Arroz de Marisco :
Very good portion for Sharing for 4-5 to get a good fulfilling sample of the Portuguese Seafood Rice. It is a stewed rice dish with a selection of seafood : Prawns, Mussels, fish & Calamari rings. On 1st look it looks similar to Paella but it is actually more saucier with a perfect amount of tasteful wetness.
Naco da Vazia com Vinho do Porto or Grilled Steak with Porto Wine Sauce:
Very good portion for sharing as we got 7-8 pieces. This was my favorite meat dish of the day and everyone at the table wanted extra of this and of course we ordered more with the $APE mooning from Apefest. The steak was perfectly cooked and is slightly crispy with a juicy red center and you can use more of the Porto sauce to bring out the favorite even more. The quality of this steak at 17 Euro is definitely something I cannot find in the USA. I enjoyed 2-3 pieces of this as we ordered extra plates for everyone.
Dessert : Pastel de Nata or Portuguese Egg Custard Tart
The crust of this was amazing, Â you can feel the crispy layers. Definitely need to use the Cinnamon to bring out the taste of the egg custard.
Pastelaria Santo Antonio: 2019 winner of best Pasteis de Nata.
- Chanimal
As if the experience was not enough we also capped things off with a stop for Ginjinha, a traditional Portuguese liquer.
Overall the experience was a success in both exploration of the culture in Lisbon and delicious food. Mono and Bored Foodie Frens look forward to future collaborations all around the world.
